Understanding Part 1
The first part of the IELTS Speaking test is similar to a relaxed conversation.
The examiner asks simple everyday questions - the kind you might hear when meeting someone for the first time.
You may be asked about things like your daily routine, hobbies, work, studies, or hometown.
The questions are not difficult. The purpose is to help you feel comfortable and get you speaking naturally.
Duration: 4–5 minutes
Number of Questions: About 10–12
Types of Questions: Simple questions about your life and everyday experiences.
Topics: Hometown, hobbies, work, studies, daily routine, etc.

Familiar Topics in Part 1
In Part 1, the examiner asks questions about familiar topics related to your everyday life.
These topics are not difficult. The goal is simply to help you speak naturally.

Important
The most common topics in Part 1 are work or studies, your home, and your hometown.
However, be ready to talk about a variety of familiar topics.
Part 1 sets the tone for your test — so start strong and make a good first impression.

How to Answer Part 1 Questions
Example question:

Do you often exercise?
Yes, I do.
Yes, I do. I usually go jogging in the mornings near my home because it helps me stay fit and relax before work.
So, what makes a strong answer in Part 1?
This shows the examiner that you can speak naturally and clearly without going off topic or giving very short answers.
Look at the sample questions below. For each one, I’ve included three possible answers.

A) This answer is too short and doesn’t develop the idea. In Part 1, you should give at least one extra detail. B) This answer starts well but goes off topic. Instead of describing the family, it turns into a story about one event. C) Best Answer: This answer gives a clear description and includes extra detail. It is natural and the right length for Part 1.

Important
There are no right or wrong answers in IELTS Speaking Part 1.
The examiner is not testing your knowledge.
They simply want to hear how clearly and naturally you communicate your ideas.
Just answer the question, explain your thoughts, and speak confidently.
